Portugal has one of Europe's best climates: over 300 days of sun a year and mild winters. Even so, the experience changes a lot with the season. This guide helps you choose the best time for the kind of trip you want — no illusions.
Spring (March to June): the best time
For many travellers, this is the ideal season. Temperatures are pleasant (18–25 °C), the landscape is green and in bloom, and the summer crowds haven't arrived. It's perfect for walking, visiting Sintra without endless queues, and catching good prices. May and June are especially recommended. Watch out for Easter, which fills Fátima with pilgrims.
Summer (July and August): sun and buzz
This is high season. Long, hot days (30 °C or more inland and in the Alentejo), beaches at their peak, and festivals everywhere. In return, it's the busiest and priciest time, especially in the Algarve and Lisbon. Tip: start sightseeing early, book everything ahead, and keep the hottest hours for the beach or a shady break.
If you can choose, avoid the second half of August: that's when the Portuguese themselves go on holiday and everything gets fuller.
Autumn (September to November): the well-kept secret
Perhaps the most underrated season. September keeps summer's warmth with half the crowds, the sea is still warm, and it's harvest time in the Douro and the Alentejo. October brings a magnificent golden light. It's excellent for food, wine and quiet outings.
Winter (December to February): mild and cheap
Portugal doesn't hibernate. Winters are mild by the coast (rarely below 8 °C in Lisbon) and there's often sun. It's the cheapest, crowd-free season — ideal for those who love cities, museums and restaurant tables without a wait. Christmas and New Year fill the streets with lights, and there are markets all over. Bring a coat and an umbrella just in case.

- June — Popular Saints: Santo António in Lisbon (12/13) and São João in Porto (23/24), with street parties, sardines and revelry.
- May and October — great pilgrimages to Fátima (12/13).
- September/October — grape harvests and wine festivals.
- February/March — Carnival, very lively in several towns.
