Few European capitals have such good beaches so close by. In under an hour from Lisbon you can choose between sheltered coves of calm water, Atlantic surf, or endless wild dunes. The trick is knowing which suits you — and how to get there stress-free.
Arrábida: the Portuguese "Caribbean"
Sheltered by a range that blocks the north wind, the Arrábida hills hold the most photogenic beaches in the region: Portinho da Arrábida, Galápos and Galapinhos. Clear emerald water, fine sand and a Mediterranean forest tumbling down to the sea. Ideal for families and anyone who wants to swim in calm water.
Getting there: about 40 minutes south of Lisbon, across the 25 de Abril bridge. In summer car access is limited for environmental reasons, which makes a lift with a driver especially handy. Discover our Arrábida tour.
Cascais and Guincho: wind and glamour
The coast to the west is more Atlantic and energetic. The town beaches of Cascais and Estoril are comfortable, with cafés and a seaside promenade. Guincho Beach, within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, is the queen of wind: a paradise for surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers, framed by dunes and the Sintra hills behind.
Simple rule: if you want to swim without waves, go south to Arrábida; if you want surf and dramatic scenery, go west to Guincho.

Comporta: dunes, rice fields and calm
Just over an hour south, Comporta is the fashionable beach that stays, against the odds, discreet and natural. Kilometres of white sand, dunes, pine woods and rice paddies, with no high-rise. Perfect for those seeking space, light and a fresh-fish lunch in the shade of a thatched roof.
When to go
- June and September — the best: warm sea, long days and fewer people than August.
- July and August — peak summer, busier beaches; go early.
- May and October — for strolling and sunbathing; the water is still cool.
- On the west coast, check the wind: Guincho is fabulous for sports, less so for relaxing on a windy day.
