Morning: Belém and the Discoveries
Start early in Belém, before the crowds. The Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds the tombs of Camões and Vasco da Gama. Nearby stand the Monument to the Discoveries and the Belém Tower on the Tagus. Before leaving, the ritual is a must: a warm Pastel de Belém, dusted with cinnamon.
Midday: Baixa and Chiado
Continue to the Pombaline Downtown, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake — one of the world's first examples of anti-seismic urban planning. Climb to Chiado for lunch among historic bookshops and century-old cafés. In Rossio, try a Ginjinha in a small cup.
Afternoon: Alfama and the Castle
The afternoon belongs to Alfama, the oldest quarter. Narrow streets, laundry at the windows and fado drifting from the taverns. Climb to São Jorge Castle for the best view over the river, and pause at the Portas do Sol viewpoint.

Evening: fado with dinner
